The Perfect Bedroom - From Bed to Linens

Assembling the perfect bedroom has never been more fun or more easy. The most difficult part may be choosing from all of the many available styles, sizes, finishes, fabrics, and pieces of bedroom furniture available. Beginning with the most common items, the list below contains the articles of furniture most often used in the bedroom and ends with a few extras to consider in designing the bedroom.

Before shopping can even be attempted, there needs to be an accurate measurement taken of the space to be filled and an idea of the budget for the project must be considered. These two pieces of information determine the number and size of furnishings which can be accommodated. Creating a bedroom need not be expensive; secondhand options exist. The most basic bedrooms usually offer a bed and some form of storage. From there, the choices are numerous. More elaborate designs cover the equivalent of several rooms and include a dressing area, walk in closets with built in storage systems, and access to a private bathroom.

There is no easy way to accurately condense the multitude of available styles, themes and designs offered today. To find inspiration, perusal of magazines on home design or furniture websites may provide an idea of what you want or what you want to avoid. Trends come and go, so feel free to follow them or ignore them as best fits your environment. Match pieces or take a more eclectic tack. Neutral tones, hardwoods and more traditional designs are safest.

The bed (and mattress set) is the central feature of the bedroom. This is not as obvious a statement as it may seem. Though frequently the largest item of furniture in the room and the most expensive, it can be easy to overlook its focal prominence. Beds come in an array of sizes. The most common for an adult or couple's bedroom are Full, Queen, King, and California King. The bed frames also come in a wide range of choices including sleigh, platform, and canopy, to name just a few. The materials used in construction are most commonly wood or iron, but may venture into interesting recycled and reclaimed substances.

Beds can be purchased with or without storage. Storage is most often provided in the form of drawers, which utilize the wasted space under the bed more effectively. Also, headboards can be found which include bookcases or shelving which can be used to hold convenience items or to display knickknacks. Bedroom sets and suites offer matching furnishings which may be used to fill out a room. These provide specific forms of storage, and will be described below.

In addition to the bed, the proper mattress is a prime concern. Beds and mattresses are usually purchased separately; this allows users to choose a style, softness, and price point which fits their personal need. In some cases, a box spring may be needed for additional comfort and support.

A dresser, double dresser, wardrobe, armoire, or lingerie chest will provide storage for clothing. Each type has its own features. Dressers offer large drawers for folded items. A wardrobe usually has some drawer space, but mainly provides hanging storage, a nice choice if there is limited closet space. An armoire offers storage similar to a wardrobe and is frequently used in modern homes to house a bedroom television as well as to store clothing. The lingerie chest is mainly for undergarments and delicates, so it provides a number of smaller drawers.

Night stands may be built into bed frames or stand alone. Nightstands are simply convenient tables with limited storage, frequently used to hold a reading lamp, alarm clock, and a few personal items. Most nightstands offer at least one drawer and one low shelf in addition to a flat table top.

Chests and cedar chests are often the honored resting place of treasured keepsake items. Cedar helps deter pests. Accent chests and blanket chests offer additional storage for daily items and linens. Often chests are displayed at the foot of the bed, the top kept relatively free of decorative items to provide easy access to the contents. If you have plenty of storage but lack seating, consider a bench or cubby bench, also placed at the foot of the bed.

Jewelry cabinets are stand alone jewelry boxes which offer proper storage for adornments. They usually offer features specific to organizing necklaces, rings, and such without damage or tangling. The vanity used to be for the lady of the house, but certain new styles are equally suitable for men. A vanity provides an area to store grooming tools and makeup. They usually come with a mirror and seating.

Should space allow, a lounging chair and reading lamp make excellent additions for their convenience and comfort. Extra seating is always welcome, especially for visitors who may find sitting on the bed to be impolite. Mirrors, in full length and a host of decorative sizes, brighten the room and give a better reflection of how you look before you venture out.

Linens and a good quality comforter or duvet (and cover) are vital accessories to consider. Be sure to know the size of the mattress before making a final selection. Finally, good window treatments provide privacy and block light, but can also be used to direct attention to finishing touches in the room. Plan ahead, shop wisely, and then relax and enjoy the benefits of a perfect bedroom.
